چکیده

Multiple Description (MD) source coding has recently emerged as an attractive framework for robust transmission over channels with transient shutdown characteristics such as the Internet, or wireless systems during a deep fade. The basic idea is to generate multiple independent descriptions of the source such that each description independently describes the source with certain fidelity, and when more than one description is available, they can be synergistically combined to enhance the quality. Most of the prior work has been based on signal processing based approaches and dominated by N = 2 descriptions case. Recently generalized MD (N >2 descriptions) coding through the usage of Forward Error Correction (FEC) codes [1,2] has been proposed and its superiority in comparison to signal processing based schemes has been illustrated. In [1], a fast (O(N)), nearly optimal algorithm (MD-FEC) has been proposed that transforms a prioritized input multiresolution bit stream into a robust MD stream where all the N packets are equally important. Note that while the former is sensitive to the position of losses in the bitstream, the latter is insensitive to them, the quality delivered by the latter being dependent only on the number of descriptions reaching the destination. The optimization problem solved in [1], is concerned with the allocation of the total transmission rate between source and channel bits so as to maximize the expected delivered quality at the receiver, given the state of the channel between the sender and the receiver.

Forward error correction (FEC) codes based multiple description coding for internet video streaming and multicast

In this work, we describe the application of generalized multiple description (MD) source coding architected through the usage of forward error correction (FEC) codes to achieve robust and e$cient Internet video streaming and multicast consistent with the existing Internet architecture. We highlight the synergistic interaction between the robust source coding and packetization strategy and an e...

A Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding

Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...

Fair Rate Allocation of Scalable Multiple Description Video for Many Clients

Peer-to-peer networks (P2P) form a distributed communication infrastructure that is particularly well matched to video streaming using multiple description coding. We form M descriptions using MDC-FEC building on a scalable version of the “Dirac” video coder. The M descriptions are streamed via M different application layer multicast (ALM) trees embedded in the P2P network. Client nodes (peers ...

Multicast and unicast real-time video streaming over wireless LANs

In this paper, we address the problem of real-time video streaming over wireless LANs for both unicast and multicast transmission. The wireless channel is modeled as a packet-erasure channel at the IP level. For the unicast scenario, we describe a novel hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) algorithm that efficiently combines forward error control (FEC) coding with the ARQ protocol. For the mul...

Path Diversity for Overlay Multicast Streaming

In this paper, we propose a new path-diversity based scheme for application layer multicast streaming over the Internet. Rather than building simple trees as in traditional multicast, we construct multicast k-DAGs, characterized by the property that each receiver has k parents. This multiplicity of parents, not only allows for streaming from multiple sources at the same time, thereby decorrelat...
